Today, as the state of Georgia faces political challenges, and protests fill the squares of Tbilisi and other cities, the Lithuanian film community expresses its solidarity and support to the Georgians who value freedom and democracy and are protesting against the fraudulent elections. Our common goals and values—freedom, justice, and the fight for democracy—are equally important in both Lithuania and Georgia.
In recent days, many Georgian citizens have taken to the streets to protest against the Georgian government's announcement to suspend negotiations on joining the European Union, and against the results of the fraudulent elections. The world is witnessing the strong and growing wave of protests by the long-silenced people in Tbilisi and beyond.
Our members are deeply concerned about these events. The news of the two recent legislative initiatives in Georgia has caused us great concern— the so-called "Foreign Agents" and "Family Values and Protection of Minors" laws, which violate human rights and freedom of expression.
We strongly condemn the brutal violence against the demonstrators, amongst whom are some of our esteemed colleagues, and call for the restoration of a democratic and lawful system.
In our hearts, we stand in solidarity with Georgia and its people, and we will continue to support Georgia until our shared aspirations and values are achieved.
